Thursday, November 16, 2017 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Where: McLeod Hall Auditorium 202 Jeanette Lancaster Way Cost: free Description: In 2015 Darius Nabors quit his job as a fundraiser at UVA’s School of Nursing to go on a 59-week trip to visit all 59 US National Parks and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. He finished his trip with a sunrise on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. His trip took him to the depths of the Colorado River on a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon National Park. He sledded down the largest sand dune in North America in Great Sand Dunes National Park and hiked to the top of Mauna Loa volcano in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Prepare to laugh, cry, and be inspired by the beautiful places that our country has to offer. Event free and open to the public. Please consider walking, biking, or taking public transit. This year's event will kick off with a talk by New York Times Chief Data Scientist Chris Wiggins on Thursday, Nov. 9, followed by a reception, and then a full day of data science Friday, Nov. 10. Ayers is the author of the Bancroft Prize–winning In the Presence of Mine Enemies and other works of history honored as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. A recipient of the National Humanities Medal from President Obama, Ayers is Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and president emeritus at the University of Richmond. He will be discussing his latest book The Thin Light of Freedom: The Civil War and Emancipation in the Heart of America and share his thoughts on how we remember the Civil War, the Confederacy, and the controversial monuments built to celebrate it. She currently holds the chair of Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Her latest book, Collected Poems 1974-2004, was released by W.W.
