Rio Grande Sports Information BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande softball team will begin its quest for the school's first-ever World Series berth when it meets Faulkner (Ala.) University in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round's Bowling Green No. 2 Bracket. The RedStorm, who are the No. 3 seed seed in the four-team bracket, will face the second-seeded Eagles on Monday, May 14, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, at the Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky. Rio Grande (35-11), which is ranked 24th nationally, punched its ticket to the national tournament by winning the River States Conference regular season and tournament championships. The RedStorm is making its fifth national tournament appearance overall and its fourth under the tournament's current format. Rio is coming off wins over Ohio Christian, West Virginia University-Tech and Midway in the RSC tournament. The RedStorm were declared the tourney champion after inclement weather prevented a championship rematch with Midway from taking place.

Unfortunately, on the biggest stage of 2018 campaign, that's exactly the fate that the RedStorm found themselves subjected to. Head coach Chris Hammond's club dropped a 1-0 extra inning decision to Faulkner University in its opening game of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round's Bowling Green No. 2 Bracket, before falling 7-0 to Madonna University in an elimination game on Monday afternoon at sauna-like Michael O. Buchanan Park. Rio Grande, which was ranked 24th nationally and seeded third in the four-team bracket, finished its season at 35-13.

Rio Grande/RSC Sports Information MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande produced three major award winners and six all-league honorees during the 2018 All-River States Conference Softball Awards Ceremony, which took place last Friday, during the opening day of play in the RSC Softball Tournament at Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna, W.Va. Five members of the RedStorm squad - junior pitcher Kelsey Conkey (Minford, OH) and senior Mallory Powell (Flatwoods, KY), sophomore infielder Michaela Criner (Bremen, OH), junior outfielder Kelly Fuchs (Williamsport, OH) and freshman catcher Kayla Slutz (Navarre, OH) - were named to the All-RSC First Team, while freshman infielder Mary Pica (Minford, OH) was a Second Team all-league pick. Rio Grande also led the way in terms of the conference's individual awards, with Criner named RSC Player of the Year, Conkey earning RSC Pitcher of the Year kudos and third-year head coach Chris Hammond recognized as RSC Coach of the Year.

The pairings and game times for the 10 four-team sites were announced Tuesday night by the national office. The RedStorm, who climbed to No. 24 in the final NAIA coaches' poll released Tuesday night, will face the 17th-ranked Eagles on Monday, May 14, at 12:30 p.m. EDT, at the Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
Rio Grande Sports Information CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The University of Rio Grande baseball team got off to a great start in its meeting with Indiana University Southeast on Friday afternoon, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. But by the time RedStorm recorded their third marker of the day, the top-seeded Grenadiers had reeled off 15 runs and the season for veteran head coach Brad Warnimont's squad was done. IU Southeast used a six-run second inning to take control and cruised to a 15-3 thrashing of the No. 3 seed RedStorm in the second round of the River States Conference Baseball Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium. The Grenadiers improved to 39-10 with the win and will face second-seeded Point Park University in winner's bracket play on Saturday. Rio Grande finished its season at 26-26.

Rio Grande Sports Information VIENNA, W.Va. - The University of Rio Grande finds itself two wins away from a championship after winning a pair of games in the 2018 River States Conference Softball Tournament, Friday afternoon, at Jackson Memorial Park. The top-seeded RedStorm rolled past No. 8 seed Ohio Christian University, 7-2, in its opening game, while blanking fifth-seeded West Virginia University-Tech, 4-0, in a winner's bracket contest. Rio Grande, which improved to 34-11 with the wins, will face either No. 3 Midway University or seventh-seeded Carlow University in the winner's bracket final on Saturday at noon.

Rio Grande Sports Information VIENNA, W.Va. - Mallory Powell had two hits, including a go-ahead three-run home run, and tied a career-high with five RBI to lead the University of Rio Grande in an 8-2 win over Midway University, Saturday afternoon, in the winner's bracket final of the River States Conference Softball Tournament at soggy Jackson Memorial Park. The top-seeded RedStorm improved to 35-11 with the win and advanced to the championship game of the double-elimination tourney. Weather permitting, head coach Chris Hammond's squad will face the survivor of the loser's bracket final between Midway and Point Park University on Sunday afternoon and would have to beaten twice by either the Eagles or the Pioneers.

RSC Sports Information MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - Top-seeded University of Rio Grande was declared the champion of the 2018 River States Conference Softball Tournament on Sunday after the RedStorm won the winner's bracket with a 3-0 record in the tournament. No. 3 seed Midway (Ky.) University (23-20) was deemed the tournament runner-up after coming through the loser's bracket and being one of the final two teams remaining along with Rio Grande (35-11). Rio Grande and Midway will be the RSC's two automatic qualifiers to the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.

Rio Grande/RSC Sports Information CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - University of Rio Grande sophomore catcher Dylan Shockley was named the River States Conference Player of the Year on Thursday night during a ceremony in between games of the RSC Baseball Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium. Shockley, a native of Minford, Ohio, entered the tournament hitting a team-best .382 with four homers, 38 runs batted in and 68 hits in 50 games for the third-seeded RedStorm.

The fourth-seeded Cougars, who are fielding a program for the first time this season, improved to 31-19-1 with the win and will face No. 2 seed Point Park University in Friday's second round at 7 p.m. Rio Grande, the tourney's No. 3 seed, slipped to 26-25 with the loss - its third in four meetings with IU Kokomo. The RedStorm faces a must-win situation in the double-elimination tourney when it squares off with top-seeded Indiana University Southeast in Friday's 3 p.m. game.

Rio Grande Sports Information OWENSBORO, Ky. - After dropping each of their first four games in early February, the University of Rio Grande baseball team has spent the entire 2018 campaign trying to get its head above water. In their final games of the regular season schedule, the RedStorm finally managed to escape their submersion and take in a healthy breath of fresh air. Head coach Brad Warnimont's squad moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season, completing a weekend series sweep of Brescia University with a 14-0 mercy rule-shortened victory and a 3-2 triumph, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference play at Kamuf Park. Rio Grande improved to 26-24 overall and 17-10 in the RSC with the wins, securing the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament in the process.

Rio Grande improved to 24-24 overall and 15-10 in league play with its seventh time in eight outings. The Bearcats slipped to 12-31 overall and 10-15 inside the RSC with the loss.

Rio Grande Sports Information PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Katie Browning and Madison Oiler picked up major awards and Tyanna Petty-Craft earned two of the seven first-place finishes by the University of Rio Grande women as the RedStorm recorded a runner-up showing in the River States Conference Track & Field Championships, Friday afternoon, at the RMU Island Sports Center. Rio Grande finished with 166 points on the day, 44 behind champion Point Park University's tally of 210. Ohio Christian University captured third place with 151 points. The top six finishers in each event scored points toward the team totals, while the top three finishers in each event were named All-Conference.

The RedStorm captured their fourth straight conference title, tallying 201 points to outdistance Point Park University, which finished 190 points. West Virginia University-Tech was third with 107 points. The top six finishers in each event scored points toward the team totals, while the top three finishers in each event were named All-Conference.

The six-team, double-elimination tourney is slated to run through Sunday. The third-seeded RedStorm (26-24, 17-10 RSC) has won nine of its last 10 outings - including a three-game sweep at Brescia University last weekend - to get over the .500 mark for the first time all season. IU Kokomo (30-19-1, 16-11 RSC), which is fielding a baseball program for the first time this season, grabbed the No. 4 seed after winning a tiebreaker with Midway University. The upstart Cougars took two of its three regular season games against Rio on Easter weekend at Bob Evans Field.

The eight-team, double-elimination tourney, which is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, will have the winner automatically qualify for the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round. The top-seeded RedStorm (32-11, 16-2 RSC) are seeking a fourth straight conference tournament title. Head coach Chris Hammond's team is already guaranteed a spot in the national tournament after winning the RSC regular season crown for a third straight season.
[Men's Golf] Rio finishes 11th at RSC Tournament
Rio Grande Sports Information UNION, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande's revived men's golf program finished in 11th place following the conclusion of the final two rounds of the River States Conference Tournament, Tuesday afternoon, at a rain-soaked Lassing Pointe Golf Course. The RedStorm bettered their overall team score in each of the final two rounds, but still finished 100 strokes behind team champion Brescia University's total of 938. Head coach Keith Wilson's club - Rio's first golf team since the late 1960s - found itself in 11th place at the end of all three rounds.

Rio Grande/NAIA Sports Information KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Rio Grande remained just outside the latest NAIA Softball Top 25 released Tuesday night by the national office. The RedStorm finished with 92 points in the balloting for the equivalent of 26th place in voting by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions. Head coach Chris Hammond's club won seven of its eight games since the release of the most recent poll, improving to 30-11 for the season. Rio Grande is scheduled to return to the field on Wednesday afternoon hosting a twinbill with non-conference rival Shawnee State University.

Rio Grande Sports Information RIO GRANDE, Ohio - University of Rio Grande senior Tyanna Petty-Craft captured the championship of the College Division Women's Heptathlon at the prestigious Penn Relays, Wednesday afternoon, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Petty-Craft, a native of Somerset, Ohio, out-pointed four other athletes for the title. Petty-Craft totaled with 4,686 points to finish ahead of runner-up Emily Hagarty from Adelphi University, who recorded 4,373 points.
Rio Grande Sports Information GRAYSON, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande men's golf team recorded a runner-up finish in Saturday's Kentucky Christian University Spring Invite at Hidden Cove Golf Course. The RedStorm finished with a 60-over par total of 348, 31 strokes behind team champion WVU-Tech's score of 317. Host Kentucky Christian was third at 352.

It is the second week in a row she has won the award.

RSC Sports Information MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - University of Rio Grande catcher Dylan Shockley hit .625 with three homers in four games last week to win River States Conference Baseball Player of the Week for April 16-22. The sophomore from Minford, Ohio, batted 10-for -16 with his three homers, a triple and six RBIs. He also walked five times and slugged 1.313 for the week.
